Celebrating International Women’s Day
Tuesday, 8th March, 2016

Election Fever hit us last week, this week it's International Women's Day and next week is Proclamation Day in many schools.
We thought we'd celebrate all three with a collage of stories supporting women who have gone before us to make life better for us.
Take a read of this article from the Journal. It gives us a great insight into the life and times of the great Irish suffragette, Hanna Sheehy Skeffington. She was one of Ireland’s most ardent promoters of women’s rights. She was an influential figure during the suffragette movement, tirelessly campaigning for the equal status of men and women in Ireland.
Another great find is a similar type article by Newstalk. They list several Influential women from poets to opera singers; emmigrants to actresses. They have a poll on which was most influential – take it and then see for yourself the results.
The theme of International Women's Day is parity. To celebrate, the folks behind IWD is asking to Pledge for Parity. Everyone - men and women - can pledge to take a concrete step to help achieve gender parity more quickly - whether to help women and girls achieve their ambitions, call for gender-balanced leadership, respect and value difference, develop more inclusive and flexible cultures or root out workplace bias. Each of us can be a leader within our own spheres of influence and commit to take pragmatic action to accelerate gender parity. Head over to the site to pledge.
Whatever way you celebrate International Women's Day – take the time to appreciate the role that women play in our society, our homes, our workplaces.
